Stop The Traffic!

So much to post, so little time to do it! I must admit I'm a tad behind in my posts. I have big plans for this humble blog in the coming months, if only there were more than 24 hours in the day (I've tried eating BarOne's to see if that would work but apparently their slogan is "not meant to be taken literally", boo).

Here's what I got up to last week Monday...

Blackberry "Photobooth" at Traffic Winter Fashion Show
Traffic is one of my favourite local stores because they always have up-to-the-minute fashion with loads of urban attitude. Best of all, they're super affordable and regularly have killer sales. So I was excited to see what they had in store for their winter fashion show at Shimmy Beach Club.

It was a perfectly warm autumn evening, didn't even need a jacket and the beautiful twilight sky coupled with  Shimmy's Miami Beach vibe set the tone.

Before the show began, we were treated to champers and sushi, my fave being the smoked salmon and cream cheese Fashion Sandwiches, a must-try!

There was even a pop-up shop on the sand where you could literally buy straight from the runway.

Shimmery!
The show itself was a platform for the wide variety of trends Traffic is embracing this winter. All of my catwalk photos came out blurry so I nicked these from SDR Photo. I did however make a little trend map of everything that stood out.

Don't worry, the girl in the first pic isn't busy tweeting "Walking down a runway, LOL! #yolo" -Blackberry was the big sponsor of the show and the first few guys and girls all walked with smartphones in their hands.
Traffic has loads of cool threads for the boys too!

Trending...

What I wore:
Tiger Print Top: Primark
Leather-look Skirt: New Look
Necklace: Mr Price
Pewter Mary-Janes: Zoom
Ring Bling: The printed glass one was a gift, no idea where I got the triangle or angel wings from, I buy rings more often than most people buy toilet paper!

Trying the trend- I absolutely adored the chunky knit snoods. This lumo yellow looked amazing on the ebony-skinned model but I'm not sure a paleface like me could pull it off in the light of day. That said, the putty-coloured one is definitely on my Winter Want List!

Thanks Traffic for an awesome evening- now I just need to start saving up for my winter wardrobe!

Tommy Hilfiger Drops Anchor In Cape Town

Say the name "Tommy Hilfiger" and you are immediately transported to images of all-American fun; preppy sweaters and skirts, stripes, nautical-inspired clothes and cool, clean, understated leisurewear.

On Wednesday I attended the launch of the new Tommy Hilfiger store at the V&A Waterfront. The store is small, but very cleverly laid out with a wide range of clothes and accessories; everything from casual wear, yacht wear and golf shirts to day dresses, leather bags and heels and outfits for special occasions. There's also plenty for the boys like gorgeous checked shirts, striped jerseys and my favourite- blue and red boat shoes with rope detail.

We were treated to bubbly, wine, cosmos and a range of yummy snacks followed by an after-party at one of my latest fave venues, Shimmy Beach Club.

What I wore: Being someone who doesn't subscribe to any one particular style (I'm way too ADD for that!), I always love the challenge of dressing specifically for the occasion and attempted to channel the casual yet classic style Mr Hilfiger made famous. I opted for dressed-down preppy with a splash of nautical colours.

Skirt: Twist
T-shirt: Primark
Belt: Vintage
Long navy shirt with gold buttons: Vintage
Hermes-inspired wedges: somewhere in Notting Hill
Clutch: Aldo
Earrings: Sass Diva

I put my hair up in a high bun, in hindsight I'm not sure it works very well on me...

Loved this cute print dress!
Girly golf shirts
60's inspired shoes- loved the heels on the left and the Art Deco wedges!
Menswear both for the office and the weekend

There was a backdrop set up outside the store where guests could be photographed with two adorably grumpy-looking Basset Hounds who were actually very well behaved apart from a slight tendency to wander off as soon as someone dropped their lead!

Tommy Hilfiger- clearly not a cat person!
There were lots of cute sailor touches around the store like these Breton-striped lobsters.

And quirky retro decor like a variety of framed Life covers

Mmm yummy (and the Cosmo wasn't half bad either)!
Super stylish salesladies
Thanks to Elle Magazine for the tickets and to The Little Black Book for organizing the general fabulousness!

Saint Laurent And The Revival Of Grunge

Having dropped the Yves and now going by the infinitely more badass-sounding Saint Laurent  and with a new designer, the rather spooky-looking Hedi Slimane at the helm, it was only a matter of time until the French fashion house made some serious waves. Their Autumn/Winter 2013/14 showing was a glamourous throwback to 90's Grunge and although these trends won't hit us until next year, there's nothing wrong with a little inspiration. Even better, grunge style is very much a DIY affair and you won't need to break the bank to get your Teen Spirit on! Read on for some tips to embracing this retro-cool trend.

Saint Laurent A/W 2013:  Plaid, leather, floral babydoll, leopard print, oversized coats, slouchy jerseys, stockings, holes, combat boots and velvet.

The Grunge Essentials: You can play fast and loose with this style of dress, there are no strict rules. The key is to look just a little bit homeless, but nothing wrong with glamming up your bergie swag with leather, lace, faux fur, velvet and accessories. And don't be alarmed if you end up looking like a crazy cat lady- layering is the best way to tackle grunge during the winter months! Go wild and have fun, isn't that what fashion's all about anyway? Here are a few key pieces for your grunge wardrobe- hit up a thrift shop to get the best bargains.

THE PLAID FLANNEL SHIRT
Plaid is the cornerstone of grunge fashion for both girls and guys. Wear it buttoned, wear it open, wear it long and slouchy, tie it round your waist or add some plaid accessories, you can't go wrong!

THE PARKA
Good old camo green is always a winner and faux fur trimmings give a hint of the aforementioned glam. Also a unisex item.

DISTRESSED STOCKINGS
Ripped, shredded, patterned, coloured, lacy or holey, keep your legs semi-warm with a pair (or 3) of stockings coz grunge girls don't wear trousers!
ACID WASH DENIM
Anything acid wash adds to the worn-down aesthetic. Try a jacket like this pretty baby or some high-waisted shorts (the latter of which can be found at literally every store or market in Cape Town right now!)

 ROUND SUNGLASSES
Don your Lennon specs whenever the sun comes out to play

BABYDOLL DRESS
The style favoured by a certain grunge widow (she who shall not be named), this flirty dress can be given a hard edge with ripped stockings and a worn leather jacket

THE HUMBLE WOOLEN BEANIE
The go-to headgear of any self-respecting grunge baby (male or female). The hair underneath is long, wavy and unbrushed and on-trend ombre locks or fun colours will fit right in

 CAMO PRINT
Although grunge music and fashion are a completely different genre to punk, both share a penchant for the anarchic and wearing military print in a casual way touches on this spirit.

 COMBAT BOOTS
The ultimate in grunge footwear. Of course Doc Martens are the most desired, like this Oxblood pair (shiny oxblood combat boots are at the top of my Winter Want List), but masculine footwear is not hard to come by and is nicely juxtaposed with your girly baby doll dress

SOME GRUNGSPIRATION PICS

Boots!

I'm going to be trying out some grunge outfits this Autumn, will post the results. Now where's my plaid shirt?!

Mellow Yellow

Winter is coming... I can no longer hear or say that without thinking about Game Of Thrones and I don't even watch Game Of Thrones! Regardless, one cannot deny that the nights are getting longer and the days are getting frostier. I can't pretend that I don't love summer; sunshine, beach, late sunsets, balmy nights and being a few shades darker than vampire, but when it comes to fashion, winter is my bitch.

This is what I wore on Tuesday when the Cape Town weather was being a sly little bugger. Case in point: weather forecast said rain and cold, I woke up to full sun. This was confusing because of all the people tweeting about rain. 2 hours later the sky was still blue. Then it rained, through the sun. After this short monkey's wedding it was really warm on my 11th floor balcony, I even took my washing rack out of my bathroom and put it outside. I got dressed and headed off to work in Gardens. At some point I must have exited my little weather bubble as by the time I arrived at work it was grey, raining, windy and freezing. I should have worn tights...

Yellow top, Edgars (but vrek old)
Jacket, H&M
Skirt, also H&M (bought on the same day, must have had Yellow Fever or something)
Leather Brogues: Dune
Pendant Necklace: Made from my great-grandfather's monogrammed patent disc (can't remember what he invented, something to do with printing I think).

Stay tuned for more autumn outfit posts as the grey clouds roll in!
